Austrian farmer sets fire to avoid disposal fees, son exposes plot
A fire broke out on a farm near the A2 Südautobahn highway in Carinthia, Austria, on Tuesday, March 10. Emergency services were called after agricultural silage sheets and waste caught alight around 9:00 AM. The blaze led to an investigation that uncovered a deliberate act to evade costs.
Firefighters and police arrived quickly to tackle the flames and determine the cause. While investigating, they discovered a 22-year-old man hiding in an outbuilding on the property. He initially claimed no knowledge of the fire but later admitted his father, a 53-year-old farmer, had started it.
The son revealed that his father set the silage plastic and waste alight to avoid paying disposal fees. Authorities confirmed no records exist for such costs in Austria for 2024 or earlier years. The farmer now faces charges once the investigation concludes.
The incident highlights the risks of illegal waste disposal on farms. The farmer's actions led to a fire requiring emergency intervention. Charges will follow once the official inquiry is complete.
