Austria’s business chamber president suspends €14,000 salary amid backlash

In a move to address public outcry, the president of the Lower Austria Economic Chamber (WKNÖ), Wolfgang Ecker, has agreed to suspend his monthly salary of around €14,000. This comes amidst controversy over recent salary increases for chamber presidents. The suspension will remain in effect until the Court of Audit completes its review, which aims to assess the value of the representation of business interests. The move follows widespread criticism, particularly from chamber members facing financial difficulties, over recent salary increases of up to 60 percent. Ecker, along with other members of the presidency, has agreed to this temporary measure, specifically suspending the presidency's compensation. The suspension of Ecker's compensation will continue until the Court of Audit's review is completed, addressing public concerns and allowing for a thorough examination of the representation of business interests. The outcome of the audit will likely influence future compensation decisions for chamber presidents.
