Austria’s Digital ID Expands to 1,350 Municipalities Nationwide
Austria’s digital ID system, ID Austria, is now available in 1,350 municipalities across the country. The latest expansion adds 509 new locations, bringing the service to roughly two-thirds of all local authorities. A nationwide tour is also underway to encourage more residents to sign up before the end of the year.
The digital ID, which functions as an online identity for government services, can only be obtained in person. Residents must apply at official sites like municipal offices, passport agencies, or tax offices. They will need an Austrian ID card or passport, a smartphone, and sometimes a recent passport photo.
The expansion brings ID Austria to more communities, making digital government services accessible to a wider group. With 1,350 municipalities now participating, the system is on track to meet its adoption targets. Non-Austrian residents also have more options, thanks to the 97 new registration points.
