Austria’s governors unite to confront budget crisis and fiscal pact disputes
Austria's governors are gathering in Styria to tackle pressing financial issues. The meeting comes amidst concerns over a widening budget deficit, with leaked figures indicating a 4.9% GDP deficit instead of the projected 4.5%. Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer (SPÖ) will join the governors to discuss the current financial situation and the 2025 budget plan.
The governors, including Upper Austria's Thomas Stelzer (ÖVP) and Tyrol's Anton Mattle (ÖVP), will focus on the fiscal pressures faced by Austria's federal states. They plan to present a unified stance on these issues during the meeting. Vienna Mayor Michael Ludwig (SPÖ) has called for stricter enforcement of European safety standards and accountability for online giants in the e-commerce sector, which will also be discussed.
The new fiscal stability pact is a key topic of negotiation. The states have criticized the federal government's initial proposal to claim 90% of borrowing capacity under the pact. Marterbauer is expected to address these concerns and provide updates on the ongoing negotiations between the states and the federal government.
The conference of governors in Styria aims to address Austria's budget performance, e-commerce regulations, and the new fiscal stability pact. With Finance Minister Marterbauer in attendance, the governors hope to find common ground on these critical issues and present a unified front for Austria's financial future.
