Austria’s National Library Seeks New Leader After Director’s Early Exit
Johanna Rachinger has left her role as director general of the Austrian National Library. Her departure, announced on November 25, 2023, came early due to health concerns. The library is now searching for a successor to take over in 2026.
Born in Putzleinsdorf on January 9, 1960, Rachinger had planned to stay until the end of 2026, when her contract expired. She had even considered returning to her home region of Mühlviertel afterward. But her exit was brought forward, and she will not return to the institution.
The Austrian National Library has begun its search for a new leader. The vacancy announcement, published in November 2025, outlines the need for someone who can continue modernising the institution. The final decision on Rachinger’s successor will shape the library’s direction for years to come.
