China is preparing to unveil a new large-scale drone, the Jiu Tian SS-UAV, in June 2025. Previously showcased at the Zhuhai Airshow in November 2024, the drone's authenticity was unclear, but its impending launch suggests it is flight-ready.
The Jiu Tian, boasting a size larger than American drones like the RQ-4 Global Hawk and MQ-9 Reaper, boasts a takeoff weight of around 16 tons, a maximum range of 7,000 kilometers, and a ceiling of 15,000 meters. It can carry up to six tons of munitions and small drones.
What sets the Jiu Tian apart, however, is its function as a drone mother ship. Its fuselage houses a "honeycomb mission bay," essentially serving as an "aircraft carrier" for drones. This feature allows the Jiu Tian to deploy swarms of up to 100 small drones, elevating it to a drone command center and significantly expanding the range of smaller drones. The name "Jiu Tian" means "great height," a nod to its intended high-altitude missions.
The Jiu Tian's design includes a sensor turret, presumably containing cameras, and a radar dome. Its large wingspan of 25 meters points to high range and endurance. It can monitor vast areas continuously due to its high-altitude operations and reduced thermal emissions.
Like the RQ-4 Global Hawk and MQ-9 Reaper, the Jiu Tian is built for endurance. Its modular design fits it for high-altitude missions with extended durations, as well as for carrying classic missiles. However, its unique ability to deploy a swarm of drones sets it apart.
For the concept to be truly effective, the drones must have swarm intelligence and function autonomously, reducing the need for individual operators. Since around 2010, China has been developing high-performance drones to compete with the USA. Models from the Caihong and Wing Loong series have been exported and tested in combat operations. The USA exercises caution when exporting drones, making China a viable alternative for countries not supplied by the U.S.
China leads the world in drone production, with nearly unmatched production capacities. Beijing controls the entire production chain, from raw materials and processing through to finished drones, a level of production depth unmatched by any other country. While the USA produces high-quality drones like the MQ-9 Reaper, its reliance on global supply chains for crucial components makes it vulnerable.
