Kristina Herbst, President of Schleswig-Holstein’s State Parliament, delivered her Christmas and New Year’s address with a strong call for democratic unity. She highlighted the need to face current challenges with determination while urging citizens to actively defend peace and freedom.

Herbst began by reflecting on the difficulties of the past year. She noted the global rise in violent conflicts and the growing uncertainty many people feel. Despite these struggles, she emphasised that peace, freedom, and democracy are not guaranteed—they require daily effort and protection.

She stressed that Germany must strengthen its resilience to preserve its way of life. Every individual, she said, has a role to play in safeguarding these values. Her speech also addressed Russia’s actions, warning that threats to European security extend even to Schleswig-Holstein. Turning to the younger generation, Herbst encouraged them to engage in discussions about the state’s future. Democracy, she argued, depends on active participation from all citizens. Before closing, she wished everyone a joyful Christmas and a peaceful, healthy New Year. Aside from her political role, Herbst serves as patron for Kiel’s annual **Tag des Sports**, held near the Haus des Sports. However, no specific future events or initiatives led by her have been confirmed for 2026.

Herbst’s address reinforced the idea that democracy demands constant vigilance and collective action. Her remarks come as Schleswig-Holstein, like much of Europe, faces ongoing geopolitical tensions. The call for participation, particularly among younger citizens, remains a key focus for the state’s leadership.
