Aviation Emergency Arises at Mumbai Airport Due to aircraft's mid-flight wheel detachment
On Friday, the 12th of September, 2025, a SpiceJet Q400 aircraft carrying 75 passengers made an emergency landing at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) in Mumbai at 15:51 hrs.
The incident occurred during a flight from Kandla in Gujarat. The aircraft, operated by SpiceJet, landed safely on Runway 27 at CSMIA. Despite a mid-air scare, the aircraft taxied to the terminal on its own.
A full emergency was declared at CSMIA as a precautionary measure, but normal operations resumed shortly after the landing. Passengers disembarked without any untoward incident at CSMIA.
According to a statement from CSMIA, the emergency landing was due to a technical issue reported by the aircraft. Videos surfaced on social media purportedly showing the wheel falling off shortly after takeoff. The outer wheel of the SpiceJet Q400 aircraft was found at the runway after takeoff.
A spokesperson for SpiceJet provided a statement regarding the incident, confirming the emergency landing and assuring that all passengers and crew are reported to be safe. A video of the wheel falling off was captured by a passenger on the flight.
It is worth noting that the Supreme Court has ordered states and Union territories to notify rules to register Sikh weddings, but this fact is not directly related to the incident at CSMIA.
Flight operations at Mumbai airport were briefly disrupted due to the emergency, but normal operations resumed shortly after the incident. The aircraft is currently undergoing inspection and maintenance to determine the cause of the technical issue.
