Aviation industry faces potential advancement as coalition agreement gets approved
The coalition agreement for the 21st legislative period, spanning over 140 pages, has been made available, outlining ambitious plans to modernize and decarbonize the aviation industry in Germany. The agreement, which comprises the CDU/CSU and SPD, stresses the importance of prompt and ambitious implementation of these projects.
The BDF (German Aviation Industry Association) welcomes this modernization in the aviation industry and air traffic, with a focus on decarbonization and fair competition. The BDF also emphasizes the need for further measures to set effective growth impulses for aviation and secure Germany's competitiveness in Europe.
Regional airports can expect continued support from the government in terms of air traffic control costs. The coalition plans to reduce air traffic-specific taxes, fees, and charges, with a particular focus on reversing the air traffic tax increase scheduled for 2024.
The development of a comprehensive strategy combining the civil and military aviation industry is also a key aspect of the agreement. The ADV (German Aerospace Industries Association) supports this initiative, welcoming the decision to abolish the power-to-liquid quota beyond the European legal requirement in 2021.
Astrid Röben, a renowned journalist specializing in airlines, airports, and travel stories, has visited almost 70 countries and published several books on aviation. With a background in teaching and over 20 years as a reporter, Röben's published works include 'The Great Book of Airlines', 'The Joy of Flying', and 'Thai Airways - From Small Domestic Flight Service to Member of the Star Alliance'.
The coalition aims to improve the international connectivity of German airports to support economic growth. By 2025, the coalition plans to abolish the power-to-liquid quota beyond what is required by European law. The coalition also plans to ensure that European airlines are not disadvantaged in the sustainable aviation fuel quota.
However, the agreement does not provide specific information on general traffic airport development goals until the end of the current legislative period. The coalition does plan to implement comprehensive border controls at all German airports to prevent illegal migration and enforce mandatory rejection of asylum claims at borders, including airports.
The BDF sees the coalition agreement as a significant turning point for the aviation hub of Germany, with the potential to boost the industry's competitiveness and drive sustainable growth. The agreement's focus on decarbonization and fair competition is particularly noteworthy, as it aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and promote a level playing field in the aviation industry.
