Aviator sets to circumnavigate Italy first.
The Italian Maritime Aviation Association has announced the upcoming "Giro d'Italia in Idrovolante 2025," a seaplane tour that will take place from September 5 to 22, covering approximately 2,000 km across Italy.
The Tour, which is still finalizing agreements with local authorities, aims to celebrate the Italian tradition in seaplanes, marking a century since the pioneering flight of Francesco De Pinedo. The Caroli Hotels Group, the Italian Air Force, the Italian Air Force Association, and the Atlantic Flyers Association are among the organizations collaborating on the event.
The Tour will start from Venice's Nicelli Airport on September 5 and end at the seaplane base of the Ecoresort Le Sirene in Gallipoli (Lecce) on September 22. Along the way, the seaplane tour will stop at several historic and scenic locations, including the Sant'Andrea seaplane base on the Isola delle Vignole, the "IdroCaproni" seaplane base on Lake Iseo at Marone (Brescia), the "Battellieri Colombo" seaplane base on the Ticino River in Pavia, and the historic "Luigi Bologna" seaplane base in Taranto.
One of the highlights of the Tour will be the stop at the marine area in front of the Rotonda Diaz on Naples' Lungomare Caracciolo, as well as the Sibari Lakes in Cassano Ionio (Cosenza). The Tour will also visit the historic seaplane base in the province of Rome, although the specific location has yet to be confirmed.
Various initiatives will be organized during the stages, including aviation-themed conferences and exhibitions, screenings of historical documentaries, meetings with local authorities and schools, promotional flights, and tastings of local enogastronomic specialties.
While specific details about the exact itinerary and planned events for the "Giro d'Italia in Idrovolante 2025" are still forthcoming, it is expected that the Tour will include air routes connecting or flying over major scenic and cultural sites in northern Italy, particularly near lakes like Garda, Como, and Maggiore. These could potentially include stops or sightseeing events at historic castles, Roman ruins, villas, and natural parks.
