Azerbaijan & Armenia Sign Historic Peace Deal, Open Borders by 2028
Azerbaijan and Armenia have taken significant steps towards normalising relations, with a historic peace deal signed in Washington in 2025. The two countries are working together to open their borders and enhance regional connectivity.
The peace process, initiated by US President Donald Trump, culminated in a joint declaration signed by Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan. This treaty, titled 'Joint Declaration on Future Relations', includes a peace initiative and the creation of the 'Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity' (TRIPP), a transit route connecting Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave through southern Armenia.
President Aliyev has declared an end to all trade restrictions with Armenia, marking a new era of peace between the two nations. This sentiment is echoed by Aliyev's statement that peace exists not only on paper but also in practice. As a symbol of this newfound peace, a shipment of Kazakh grain has been sent to Armenia. The 'Zangezur corridor', another name for the TRIPP, is expected to be operational by the end of 2028.
The normalization of relations between Azerbaijan and Armenia is progressing steadily, with the opening of borders and the establishment of the TRIPP set to boost trade and regional connectivity. The peace deal, initialled in 2025, has laid the foundation for a new era of cooperation between the two countries.
