Baden-Württemberg honors Lothar Späth's legacy a decade after his death

Wednesday, 18 March 2026, marked the tenth anniversary of the death of former Minister-President Prof. Dr. h. c. Lothar Späth. Leaders from Baden-Württemberg gathered to honour his memory at a solemn ceremony in Stuttgart. A wreath was laid at Späth's honorary grave in Waldfriedhof cemetery, attended by current Minister-President Winfried Kretschmann and Deputy Minister-President Thomas Strobl. The commemoration took place at Späth's honorary grave in Stuttgart-Degerloch. Minister-President Kretschmann personally laid a wreath, joined by Deputy Minister-President and Interior Minister Thomas Strobl. Both leaders reflected on Späth's enduring influence on the region and beyond.

Kretschmann described Späth as a visionary who invested in the future with boldness and determination. Strobl echoed this sentiment, calling him a thorough pragmatist, free of ideology, whose decisions still shape Baden-Württemberg today. He also praised Späth's refreshing, unpretentious, and warm personality—a quality that endeared him to many. Affectionately nicknamed 'Cleverle' by the people of Baden-Württemberg, Späth was known for his shrewd yet forward-thinking approach. His leadership extended far beyond the state's borders, leaving a legacy that remains relevant a decade after his passing.
