Baden-Württemberg launches competition to solve business succession challenges

A new competition has launched in Baden-Württemberg to tackle the growing issue of company succession. The 2026/2027 Start-up BW State Campaign now invites towns, cities, and economic development agencies to submit their ideas. Organisers hope to reward innovative approaches that help businesses transition smoothly to new leadership.

The contest introduces a fresh category called 'Succession', designed to address the challenges many firms face when passing control to the next generation. Municipalities can apply by developing plans for entrepreneur-friendly programmes, with funding available for expert advice during the first phase.

Successful entries will earn the 'Entrepreneur-Friendly Municipality' award. The top three finalists will then compete in the state final, held during the Annual Conference of Baden-Württemberg Economic Developers on November 23, 2026, in Stuttgart. Cash prizes await the winners: first place receives €10,000, second place €7,500, and third place €5,000. The competition is a joint effort by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Labor, and Tourism, along with state municipal and industry associations. Winning municipalities will also gain the title 'Entrepreneur-Friendly Municipality – Distinguished Location'.

The initiative aims to highlight and support local efforts that boost business growth and succession planning. Applications are now open, with the first phase focusing on practical, well-structured proposals. The finalists will be announced at the Stuttgart conference in late 2026.
