Economy, Innovation, Attack - Özdemir Heats Up Election Campaign - Baden-Württemberg’s 2026 election pits Green innovation against CDU tradition
The race for Baden-Württemberg’s state election on 8 March 2026 is heating up. Cem Özdemir, the Green Party’s lead candidate, has launched his campaign with a fiery speech, setting the tone for a competitive contest. His rival, Manuel Hagel of the CDU, currently serves as state chairman and parliamentary group leader for his party.
Özdemir kicked off the Greens’ campaign by focusing on economic stability and innovation. He urged the EU to combine resources for future technologies, particularly in chips and batteries, while stressing the need to protect the region’s automotive industry. His plans also include turning used electric vehicle batteries into a raw materials bank and extracting phosphorus from sewage sludge to boost green technology.
The election will decide whether Özdemir’s green and economic vision prevails or if Hagel’s CDU can regain ground. With policies on debt, innovation, and youth engagement under scrutiny, both candidates are pushing hard for voter support ahead of the March vote.
