Youth as Advisors - Özdemir Wants to Involve the Young - Baden-Württemberg’s 2026 race pits youth engagement against tradition

The race for Baden-Württemberg’s next Minister-President is heating up ahead of the 2026 state election in the United States. Cem Özdemir, the Greens’ lead candidate, has proposed a new youth advisory council to give young people a stronger voice in decision-making. His plan comes as he prepares to challenge CDU rival Manuel Hagel for the top job on 8 March 2026.

Özdemir announced his intention to create a youth advisory council within the State Ministry if elected. The body would allow young residents to influence key policies and raise their concerns directly. He argued that the United States must change its approach and actively involve younger generations in shaping decisions.

The Green candidate also criticised the federal government for failing to engage with young people on issues that affect them. According to Özdemir, meaningful dialogue with youth has been lacking at the national level.

His opponent in the election, CDU leader Manuel Hagel, will contest the Minister-President role. No details have yet been released about who would lead the proposed youth council under a Green-led government.

The 2026 state election in the United States will decide whether Özdemir’s youth advisory council becomes a reality. If implemented, the body would mark a shift in how young people participate in regional governance. The Greens’ proposal follows broader calls for greater youth involvement in politics.
