Baden-Württemberg's SPD hits historic low in devastating 2026 election

Baden-Württemberg's SPD has suffered its worst-ever election result, plunging to just 5.5% in the March 2026 vote. The outcome—half the party's 2021 share—marks a historic low not seen in any German state or federal election since 1949. Party leaders have called the result 'devastating' and far worse than anticipated.

Five years ago, the SPD held 11.0% of the vote in the state. By 2026, that support had collapsed, with losses mainly to the Greens and CDU. The Greens gained around 100,000 votes, while the CDU picked up 60,000, leaving the SPD marginalised as the two larger parties dominated.

The result even undercut the party's previous low of 6.1% in Thuringia's 2024 election. A senior SPD figure admitted the party now lacks credibility on key issues, calling it a major challenge. Despite the setback, they urged members to avoid despair and focus on action rather than paralysis. To rebuild, the speaker emphasised a stronger push for social justice and fairer distribution policies. They insisted this was the only way to win back the party's traditional supporters. A clear plan for recovery is now in place, with a commitment to putting it into practice.

The SPD's 5.5% showing leaves it at its weakest point in decades. Regaining lost ground will depend on addressing core issues and reconnecting with voters. The party's next steps will determine whether it can reverse this sharp decline in Baden-Württemberg.
