Baden-Württemberg's tight election race reaches final hours before Sunday vote

Baden-Württemberg will hold its state election on Sunday, March 8, 2025. Voters will decide between the Greens and the CDU, who are locked in a tight race for first place. Polling stations will remain open from 8 a.m. until 6 p.m., with early projections expected shortly after closing.

The first exit poll estimates will be published immediately after 6 p.m. These early figures, based on anonymous voter surveys, provide an initial indication of the outcome. However, they are not official results.

Throughout the evening, forecasts will grow more accurate as actual ballot counts are tallied. The Statistical Office of Baden-Württemberg will release its first provisional projections from around 6 p.m., using exit polls and early district returns. Historically, projections by broadcasters ARD and ZDF have been highly reliable, deviating by less than 0.5 percentage points on average.

A preliminary result should be available by the end of election night. Beyond the Greens and CDU, voters will determine whether the FDP and the Left Party secure enough support to enter the state parliament. The official final results will later appear in the State Gazette for Baden-Württemberg.

The election will shape the next government in Baden-Württemberg. A close contest between Cem Özdemir's Greens and Manuel Hagel's CDU is expected to dominate the results. The final composition of the state parliament will depend on whether smaller parties meet the required threshold.
