Nothing works without a printer in the BAföG office in MV - BAföG in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: Students Face Outdated Systems
In Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, thousands of students are submitting their BAföG applications for the new academic year, predominantly online. However, the BAföG offices still struggle with outdated systems, requiring printed documents to be manually filed. Currently, the BAföG offices in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern lack a revision-proof file storage system or an e-file system. This means that digitally submitted documents must be printed out and assigned to paper files. In contrast, other federal states like Saxony-Anhalt and Hesse have already implemented electronic processing of BAföG applications. Students in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern can currently receive up to 992 euros per month towards their living expenses under the Federal Training Assistance Act (BAföG). However, half of this amount typically needs to be repaid after graduation. The state plans to introduce an electronic file system in the BAföG offices by the end of 2029 to streamline the application process. More than 8,000 students have submitted BAföG applications in each of the past two years in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, representing over a quarter of all students. The electronic processing of applications is expected to save time and eliminate the need for printing and filing documents. However, the names of students who submitted applications for the current academic year in Schwerin are not publicly available.
