Baksa's New Pygmy Hog Mascot Aims to Lift Voter Turnout Ahead of Elections

Baksa district has introduced a new mascot named Pygmy to boost voter engagement. The character draws inspiration from the endangered pygmy hog, a rare species found in Manas National Park. Officials hope the initiative will raise awareness and increase turnout in the upcoming Assembly election. The mascot was officially unveiled by Kimnei Changsan, who serves as both District Commissioner and District Election Officer of Baksa. The launch forms part of the SVEEP programme, a nationwide effort to educate voters and improve electoral participation.

The choice of Pygmy highlights the region's unique wildlife, particularly the pygmy hog—a critically endangered animal native to Manas National Park. While recent population data for the species remains unavailable, the mascot aims to connect local conservation efforts with civic responsibility. The initiative ties environmental awareness to democratic participation. By featuring the pygmy hog, officials seek to make voter education more relatable and engaging. The mascot will appear in campaigns leading up to the Assembly election.
