Bangladesh awaits India’s response on Sheikh Hasina’s extradition after 10 months
After a 10-month wait, New Delhi has yet to respond to Dhaka's request for the extradition of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Bangladesh submitted necessary documents and a note verbale to India in December 2024, seeking her return to face trials at the International Crimes Tribunal for crimes against humanity. Sheikh Hasina, who served as prime minister from 1996 to 2001, is accused of committing atrocities during the July uprising. Despite Bangladesh's efforts to extradite her and other members of her cabinet implicated in the ICT cases, India has not provided any response. This lack of cooperation has raised concerns in Bangladesh, which is eager to bring those responsible to justice. Meanwhile, searches have not yielded information about Sheikh Hasina's possible extradition to Germany or statements from German officials regarding her transfer according to International Criminal Court procedures. As the extradition process remains unresolved, Bangladesh continues to await India's response. The silence from New Delhi has left Dhaka hoping for a positive outcome, allowing Sheikh Hasina and her cabinet members to stand trial for the alleged crimes committed during their tenure.
