Bangladesh candidate faces probe over ‘bamboo sticks’ election speech

A candidate in Bangladesh’s upcoming elections has been ordered to explain controversial remarks made during a campaign event. Md Ruhul Amin, running for Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami in Chuadanga-2, received a show-cause notice after allegations of violating the election code of conduct. The complaint stems from a speech where he reportedly urged activists to prepare for confrontation.

The legal action began when MA Sabur, chief election agent for BNP candidate Mahmud Hasan Khan Babu, filed a formal complaint. Sabur accused Ruhul Amin of making provocative statements at a Jamaat-e-Islami workshop, specifically instructing supporters to 'keep bamboo sticks ready and use them if necessary.' A video of the speech, now circulating on social media, was submitted as evidence.

The notice was issued by Nasir Hossain, who heads the constituency’s Election Investigation and Judicial Committee. Hossain, also a judge at Jibannagar Civil Court, has demanded Ruhul Amin appear before the committee on January 19 at 10:30am. The candidate must provide a written explanation for his remarks. Ruhul Amin has denied any wrongdoing. He claims his words were taken out of context and intended to prevent election fraud, not incite violence. The Chuadanga District Judge Court will review the case.

The show-cause notice requires Ruhul Amin to justify his statements or face potential consequences. His response will determine whether further action is taken under election laws. The case highlights tensions in Chuadanga-2 ahead of the vote.
