Bangladesh frees five prisoners ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr celebrations

Five convicted prisoners in Bangladesh have been released ahead of Eid-ul-Fitr. The decision came after the president remitted their remaining sentences under constitutional powers. Officials confirmed the move follows a long-standing tradition of pardons during the festival.

The prisoners—Akash Rishi Prokash Das, Robiul Hossain, Jikarul Haque Jiku, Nuruzzaman, and Abdul Karim—were serving time for various offences. Each had already completed more than half of their original sentences. Their release was ordered through a gazette notification issued by the ministry of home affairs on March 11.

The assistant inspector general of prisons for development, Md Jannat-Ul Farhad, announced the decision. Some of the prisoners were freed immediately, while the final procedures for the rest are set to finish by Sunday. The pardons were granted under Article 49 of the Bangladesh Constitution, allowing the president to remit sentences in special cases.

While Eid-ul-Fitr often sees similar releases, no official records detail the exact number of prisoners freed under such measures in recent years.

The five men will now return to their communities after serving the majority of their terms. Their release aligns with past practices of granting clemency during Eid-ul-Fitr. The government has not provided further details on additional pardons for this year's celebrations.
