Bangladesh honours Buddhist leader Gyanashree Mahathero’s legacy of compassion and unity

A two-day programme in Chattogram recently honoured the late Agra Mahapandit Gyanashree Mahathero, one of Bangladesh’s most respected Buddhist leaders. Organised by the Bangladesh Buddhist Association, the main event celebrated his lifelong dedication to religious and humanitarian work. Prominent figures from politics and faith attended to pay their respects.

The programme, held in Chattogram, was chaired by Upasanghraraj Shasanbhaskar Shasanpriyo Mahathero, the highest religious leader of Bangladesh’s Buddhist community. It commemorated Gyanashree Mahathero, who passed away on November 13, 2022, and was the third highest religious guru of Buddhism in the country. His contributions earned him the Ekushey Padak, a national award for social service.

AFM Khalid Hossain, a senior official, praised Mahathero’s welfare work and humanitarian efforts. He also highlighted the interim government’s commitment to supporting Buddhist monasteries nationwide and fostering unity among all communities. The event drew notable attendees, including BNP standing committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and BNP-nominated MP candidate Abu Sufian. Throughout the programme, speakers reflected on Mahathero’s century-long dedication to religious and social causes. His legacy was described as a guiding force for harmony and compassion in Bangladesh.

The commemorative event underscored Gyanashree Mahathero’s lasting impact on Bangladesh’s Buddhist community and beyond. His work in social service and religious leadership continues to influence efforts toward unity and welfare. The government’s contributions to monasteries and the presence of political figures marked the occasion’s significance.
