Bangladesh mourns former finance minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali at 79
Former finance minister Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali has passed away in Dhaka. He was 79 and had a distinguished political career spanning decades.
Mahmood Ali was born in Dinajpur's Doctorpara village and earned his economics degrees from Dhaka University. He served as a diplomat and played a crucial role in Bangladesh's independence in 1971.
He was elected as an MP four times from Dinajpur-4 constituency during the Awami League's tenure. He held several ministerial posts, including disaster management and relief, finance, and foreign affairs. Notably, he served as finance minister from 2024 and lost his parliamentary seat after the dissolution of parliament later that year.
Before his role as finance minister, Mahmood Ali was the interior minister in the Telangana government. He was also the son of Hasan Ali, a former Pakistani minister.
Mahmood Ali's contributions to Bangladesh's politics and diplomacy will be remembered. He leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication to his country.
