Bangladesh Opposition Alliance Pushes for Free Elections in 2026
Bangladesh's opposition alliance, the Ganatantra Mancha, has handed over its charter to the interim government, urging swift implementation. The alliance, comprising six leading opposition parties, seeks free and fair elections in February 2026.
The Ganatantra Mancha, consisting of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JaSoD), Gono Forum, Nagorik Oikya, Bikalpa Dhara Bangladesh, and Ganatantri Party, presented its charter on October 28. The alliance, led by various prominent figures including Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and Dr. Kamal Hossain, demands the interim government's active role in implementing the July National Charter 2025.
Coordinator Hasnat Quaiyum has criticized the National Consensus Commission for obstructing the charter's implementation. The Ganatantra Mancha insists that the government commence dialogues with political parties to expedite the next general election, scheduled for February 2026.
