Bangladesh to open embassy in Switzerland
Bangladesh will open a new embassy in Bern, Switzerland, following approval by the interim government. The decision highlights Switzerland’s growing importance as a development partner and strategic ally. A small team will initially staff the mission.
The proposal to establish the embassy was approved during a meeting of the council of advisers. Professor Muhammad Yunus chaired the session, where officials reviewed the plan.
Bangladesh has long managed its Swiss affairs from a permanent mission in Geneva. This office handled both UN-related duties and bilateral embassy tasks. The new Bern embassy will now take over these responsibilities. At first, the mission will operate with a limited team. An ambassador, a first secretary, and a small number of support staff will run the embassy’s daily work.
The embassy’s opening strengthens ties between Bangladesh and Switzerland. Officials will now focus on setting up operations and expanding diplomatic engagement. The ambassador’s name has yet to be announced.
