Bangladeshi garment workers strike against Amazon in global Black Friday protest
Bangladeshi garment workers joined a worldwide protest against Amazon on Black Friday. The demonstrations were part of the 'Make Amazon Pay' campaign, which saw coordinated strikes and rallies across more than 30 countries. Organisers demanded fair wages, safer workplaces, and stronger union rights for those in Amazon’s supply chain.
The Sommilito Garments Sramik Federation (SGSF) led a solidarity rally in Dhaka, with workers from multiple factories taking part. Nazma Akter, president of SGSF, accused Amazon of paying inadequate wages, suppressing union activity, and maintaining unsafe conditions in Bangladesh’s garment sector.
The global 'Make Amazon Pay' movement highlighted long-standing concerns over labour rights and working conditions. Protesters urged the company to address wage gaps, recognise unions, and ensure environmental sustainability. Amazon has yet to respond to the demands for signing the Accord or improving supply chain standards.
