Basel’s Grand Council approves emergency fund for construction-hit businesses
The Grand Council has voted overwhelmingly to aid businesses struggling with revenue losses due to prolonged construction activity. The motion, proposed by an unnamed council member, calls for a support fund with streamlined financing and a two-year trial period.
The Basel government has been given three months to respond to the motion, after which it will be reconsidered by parliament. The government is currently exploring the creation of a relief fund for businesses negatively impacted by nearby construction work. This fund aims to provide assistance to businesses that have suffered significant losses due to the disruption caused by construction sites.
The Grand Council's motion, passed with a landslide majority of 92 to 1, underscores the council's commitment to supporting local businesses. The Basel government is now tasked with developing a support fund that will help these businesses weather the challenges posed by construction activity.
