BASF to slash 2,000 Berlin jobs in major overseas shift by 2028

BASF has announced plans to move a large portion of its Berlin-based jobs overseas. The decision comes after a town hall meeting where staff were informed of new cost-cutting strategies. Up to 70 percent of roles at the company's largest service centre could be affected by 2028.

The chemical giant currently employs around 3,000 people at its Global Business Services hub on Storkower Straße in Berlin. Under the new plan, only about 1,000 jobs may remain in the city. Most of the relocated positions will transfer to a digital hub in Hyderabad, India, with additional roles moving to Malaysia.

The move reflects a broader trend in German industry, where firms are increasingly shifting operations abroad. BASF's decision follows internal discussions on restructuring and reducing expenses. Employees were briefed on the changes during a recent company-wide meeting.

By 2028, BASF's Berlin service centre will shrink significantly. Only a third of its current workforce is expected to stay, while the rest will be based in India and Malaysia. The company has not yet named the specific facilities involved in the transition.
