Bavaria Kicks Off European Hydrogen Hub With 15-Kilometer Pipeline

Bavaria has taken a significant step towards becoming a European hydrogen hub. The state government has granted a permit to construct the first stage of the HyPipe Bavaria - The Hydrogen Hub project, a 15-kilometer hydrogen pipeline near the Austrian border. This marks the practical start of implementing Germany's national hydrogen infrastructure network, with Bavaria aiming to lead the way in building hydrogen infrastructure.

The HyPipe one pipeline, classified as a PCI project by the European Union, is the first expansion stage of the larger HyPipe Bavaria project. It will connect to international hydrogen import corridors such as the SoutH2 Corridor and H2EU+Store, providing planning security for companies in the Burghausen and Ingolstadt regions. The pipeline aims to utilize existing gas infrastructure to transport green hydrogen, supplying the Bavarian chemical triangle around Burghausen.

The entire 300-kilometer-long hydrogen network in Bavaria is scheduled for commissioning in the early 2030s. This project is a key part of that network, demonstrating Bavaria's commitment to pioneering hydrogen infrastructure. The transmission network operator Bayernets has been granted the planning permit by Bavaria's Minister of Economics and Energy Hubert Aiwanger.

The construction of HyPipe one pipeline is set to facilitate the connection of the Burghausen and Ingolstadt regions to international hydrogen import corridors. As the first stage of the HyPipe Bavaria project, it signifies the start of the national hydrogen infrastructure network in Germany. With this permit, Bavaria continues to position itself as a leader in the development of hydrogen infrastructure, aiming to provide planning security for companies and support the growth of the green hydrogen sector.
