Bavaria's 2026 elections deliver surprises as Unterallgäu picks Landrat in first round
The 2026 municipal elections in Bavaria have delivered some surprises, particularly in the Allgäu region. While most mayoral races required a second round, one district—Unterallgäu—already chose its new Landrat in the first vote on 8 March.
Alex Eder of the Freie Wähler secured victory in Landkreis Unterallgäu with 52.6% of the vote, avoiding a runoff. Meanwhile, neighbouring Oberallgäu and other districts, including Munich, Nuremberg, Augsburg, and Kempten, will hold second-round elections on 22 March.
Real-time updates on results, vote counts, and analysis are available via a live ticker. An interactive map will also display mayoral election outcomes for every town as soon as they are confirmed.
Most mayoral races have been counted, but finalising all town, municipal, and district council results may take until Wednesday. The statewide picture will only be complete once every ballot is processed.
The elections have produced mixed outcomes across Bavaria, with some districts settling their leadership early and others heading to runoffs. Final results for all councils and mayoral positions will be officially confirmed by midweek.
