Bavaria's 2026 elections reveal AfD's rising local influence despite leadership losses
Bavaria's 2026 municipal elections have concluded with mixed results for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD). While the party failed to secure any top executive roles in major cities, it significantly increased its presence in local councils. Voter turnout also rose across key urban areas compared to the last election in 2020.
Early figures showed higher participation this year. By 2 PM on election day, Munich recorded 43 percent turnout, up from 41.9 percent in 2020. Nuremberg saw a sharper rise, reaching 34 percent compared to 29.2 percent five years ago. Augsburg's turnout also climbed to 23 percent from 21.8 percent. Across Bavaria, overall participation hit 53.6 percent.
None of AfD's officially nominated candidates won a top executive position in the first round. The party also failed to secure the most or second-most votes in any district, independent city, or municipality with over 10,000 residents. Despite this, its influence grew in local councils.
In Nuremberg, AfD's vote share jumped from 5.69 percent in 2020 to 13.5 percent. Coburg saw its AfD city council seats rise from one to four. Schweinfurt's AfD representation more than doubled, increasing from three to eight seats. The party also made modest gains in Munich, though its support there remains lower than in other regions.
Analysts expect further AfD advances in district councils. The party's expanded presence in city and town councils, as well as district assemblies, marks a notable shift in Bavaria's political landscape.
The election results confirm AfD's inability to secure key leadership roles in Bavaria's major municipalities. However, its growing representation in local councils signals a shift in regional politics. The higher voter turnout suggests increased public engagement in this year's municipal decisions.
