By Mail or Ballot Box - How Does Bavaria Vote and What Does It Tell Us? - Bavaria's 2026 municipal elections set for record postal voting surge
Bavaria's municipal elections on 8 March will once again see a high number of voters casting their ballots by post. With around 10.1 million eligible residents
Postal voting has long been a staple in Bavaria, with the state leading the country in mail-in participation. In the 2025 federal election, 52.2% of Bavarian voters chose this method. Cities like Nuremberg and Augsburg have seen a steady increase in absentee voting for decades, while pensioners and mobile workers now rely on it more than ever.
The process begins once voters receive their official polling notification. After that, absentee voting materials are dispatched. To ensure ballots arrive on time, the postal service advises sending them no later than the Thursday before the election. All completed ballots must reach election offices by 6:00 PM on election Sunday to be counted. In past municipal elections, around 60% of voters used polling cards, which include absentee ballots. Despite the lack of recent city-specific data, the trend suggests postal voting will remain strong in 2026, with no signs of declining interest.
The upcoming elections will rely heavily on postal ballots, reflecting Bavaria's long-standing preference for absentee voting. With millions of eligible voters and a well-established system, the method is expected to play a key role in determining local government outcomes. Officials continue to encourage early posting to avoid last-minute delays.
