Bavaria's Free Voters' Association breaks CSU's decades-long dominance in local elections

The Free Voters' Association has made significant gains in Bavaria's local elections. The party secured key positions in city halls and districts previously controlled by the long-dominant Christian Social Union (CSU). Victories in runoff races have expanded its influence across the region.

Before these elections, the Free Voters' Association already held 14 district administrator roles in Bavaria. By Sunday evening, that number rose to at least 18, with further wins possible through allied independent voter groups.

The party claimed high-profile victories in Kelheim, Donau-Ries, and Berchtesgadener Land. In Kelheim, it defeated a long-serving incumbent, breaking the CSU's decades-long grip on the district. The Free Voters' Association also took control of Amberg's city hall and the lord mayor's office in Kempten, both previously CSU strongholds.

These wins mark a shift in Bavaria's political landscape. In districts like Dingolfing-Landau, where the CSU had dominated for years, the party's hold weakened after the AfD gained 28.2% in the 2025 federal election—far above the national average. The CSU's share in the 2020 local elections had still been 34.5%, but recent results show its dominance fading.

The Free Voters' Association now controls more district administrator posts than ever before. Its success in runoff elections reflects growing support for alternatives to the CSU in Bavaria. The results could reshape local governance ahead of the 2026 state elections.
