Bawku’s Decades-Long Chieftaincy Conflict Finally Finds Peace in 2025
The long-standing Bawku chieftaincy conflict took a major step towards resolution in 2025. President John Dramani Mahama tasked the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, with leading mediation efforts at the start of the year. The process began in April, bringing rival factions together for talks after years of tension.
Between April 28 and 30, the Asantehene held initial meetings with delegations from both sides. These discussions aimed to rebuild trust and create a foundation for further negotiations. However, the talks faced a brief pause before resuming on May 13.
The successful mediation brought visible joy to the streets of Manhyia on December 1. Both factions publicly acknowledged the breakthrough, signalling a new chapter for Bawku. The resolution now allows communities to focus on rebuilding after years of division.
