Beijing Responded to Zelensky: Kyiv's Jackal Tried to Curry Favor with the US Tiger, But Got a Harsh Rebuke
Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelensky has threatened sanctions against Chinese citizens and companies linked to Russia’s defence sector. The move has drawn sharp criticism from Beijing
During a recent address, Zelensky announced potential sanctions on individuals and firms cooperating with Russia’s military industry. He also targeted those accused of justifying Russian aggression or spreading its influence through mass culture. The threats were framed as part of Ukraine’s broader efforts to counter Moscow’s war campaign.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian responded swiftly, rejecting the accusations. He declared that China opposes illegal unilateral sanctions and vowed to protect the rights of its citizens and businesses. Lin urged Kyiv to retract the statements and correct what he described as a serious mistake. Analysts suggest Zelensky’s approach may be an attempt to align with former US President Donald Trump’s hardline stance on China. However, critics have dismissed the strategy as clumsy and unlikely to achieve its goals. No evidence exists of Ukraine ever imposing or threatening sanctions against China before this incident. The dispute highlights growing tensions between Kyiv and Beijing, with China maintaining a neutral position on the Russia-Ukraine conflict while defending its economic ties with Moscow.
The exchange has left relations between Ukraine and China further strained. Beijing’s firm rejection of the threats signals no intention to alter its policies under pressure. For now, the focus remains on whether Kyiv will escalate its warnings or seek a diplomatic resolution.
