Belarus backs out of ship deal with Russia’s Krasnoye Sormovo plant
Belarus has refused to pay for ships built at Nizhny Novgorod’s Krasnoye Sormovo plant. The decision was announced during recent parliamentary hearings on Russia’s shipbuilding strategy. Officials now say the vessels could be handed over for free under certain conditions.
In 2022, Belarus had initially agreed to buy ships from the Krasnoye Sormovo plant. The deal was first announced by Belarusian Ambassador Dmitry Krutoy during a visit to Nizhny Novgorod. State official Viktor Karankevich later confirmed the purchase plans that same year.
The decision leaves the future of the ships uncertain. If approved under the state programme, Belarus will receive them without payment. The outcome depends on whether the vessels meet the required criteria for preferential treatment.
