Belarus Opposition Leader Svetlana Tikhanovskaya Steps Down After Years in Exile
Svetlana Tikhanovskaya, the prominent leader of Belarus’s opposition, has announced her decision to step down from her role. The move comes after years of leading resistance efforts from exile in Lithuania. Multiple sources, including her own teams and Lithuanian officials, have confirmed the news. Tikhanovskaya’s resignation was verified by four members of her teams, as well as a source within Poland’s Foreign Ministry. Two anonymous Lithuanian lawmakers also confirmed the development. Her husband, Sergei Tikhanovsky, remains in the United States for security reasons. As of January 18, 2026, no successor has been publicly named to take over her leadership position in Vilnius. Despite her departure, several members of her teams are expected to continue their work in the Lithuanian capital. The decision leaves the Belarusian opposition without a clear frontline leader for now. Tikhanovskaya’s exit marks a shift in the movement’s structure, though her teams’ operations in Vilnius will persist. The search for a new figurehead remains ongoing.
