Belarus Sports Ministry Faces Leadership Shake-Up in Late 2024
The Belarusian Ministry of Sport and Tourism has seen two major leadership changes in late 2024. Irina Voronovich, the long-serving director of the department of education, left her role after refusing new employment terms. Shortly after, Oleg Andreychik, a former deputy minister, also stepped down from his position.
Irina Voronovich had led the department of education since January 2020. A specialist in cultural studies, she held a PhD in the field. Her departure came after she declined to accept revised working conditions, leading to her dismissal.
Her replacement, Sergei Kaftintsev, now heads the department of education. The ministry did not disclose further details about his background or plans for the role.
Meanwhile, Oleg Andreychik, 53, resigned as deputy minister after three and a half years in the post. Before this, he had overseen the Grodno Regional Directorate for Sport and Tourism. In his younger years, he competed as a long-distance runner for Belarus’s national athletics team.
The ministry now faces a transition period with new leadership in key roles. Sergei Kaftintsev takes charge of the department of education, while the reasons behind Andreychik’s resignation remain undisclosed. Both changes mark a shift in the department’s senior management.
