Belarus wants to introduce a ban on registering old cars

Belarus is planning stricter rules for older vehicles, following a similar approach in Russia. The changes will tighten standards but will not include a separate inspection process or special exemptions for classic cars. Beltehosmotr, the country’s vehicle inspection agency, has confirmed these details in recent statements.

At present, Belarus requires inspections every three years for cars under three years old. Vehicles aged three to ten must be checked every two years, while those over ten face annual tests. These intervals will remain unchanged under the new proposals.

The government is now considering restrictions on registering older cars, mirroring Russia’s recent policy. However, Beltehosmotr has ruled out creating a relaxed ‘vintage car’ category. It has also dismissed the idea of a separate roadworthiness assessment for older vehicles.

Officials stressed that no outright age-based bans would be introduced. Instead, the focus will be on tightening registration rules for older models without offering exemptions or softer requirements.

The planned changes will align Belarus more closely with Russia’s vehicle regulations. Older cars will face stricter registration rules, though inspection schedules will stay the same. No special provisions or relaxed standards will apply to classic or vintage vehicles.
