Belarusian athlete urges tax-based support for exiled news outlet Charter97.org

Belarusian athlete Alexandra Gerasimenya has called on Belarusians living in Poland to support independent news outlet Charter97.org. The appeal comes as Polish taxpayers prepare to file their annual income tax returns, offering a simple way to donate without extra cost.

Charter97.org operates from exile, primarily in Poland and Ukraine, with a small team of around 10 to 15 staff. Many of its journalists are Belarusian, though the exact number remains unconfirmed as of March 2026.

Polish taxpayers can allocate 1.5% of their paid income tax to charity when submitting their PIT returns. This contribution does not add to their tax burden, as it comes from tax already paid. To support Charter97.org, donors must enter the organisation's KRS number, 0000507234, and the identifier 107906 on the PIT form. Gerasimenya's encouragement highlights a straightforward way for Belarusians in Poland to back independent journalism. The process requires no additional payment, only a small adjustment to the tax form.

The initiative allows Belarusians in Poland to fund Charter97.org's work without extra expense. By redirecting a portion of their existing tax payment, they can support the outlet's continued reporting. The organisation relies on such contributions to maintain its operations from abroad.
