Benfica Leadership Elections Set Record Turnout, Trigger Runoff
Benfica's leadership elections have concluded with a record-breaking turnout. A total of 85,422 members cast their votes, setting a new world record for a sports club. The results indicate a victory for current president Rui Costa, but not with an absolute majority, setting the stage for a runoff against candidate João Noronha Lopes.
Only one polling station's ballots remain to be counted, but the current results suggest a runoff is inevitable. Luís Filipe Vieira, who had previously announced his candidacy, acknowledged that he did not achieve the desired result. He believes that launching his bid earlier could have altered the election's outcome. Despite his prediction of finishing in third place with no chance of advancing to the runoff, Vieira assured supporters that he had given his all to Benfica and is ready to continue helping the club. With 20 years of service to Benfica, Vieira stated that he would remain available to assist the club with the same spirit of dedication and love.
The elections for Benfica's governing bodies have concluded with a historic turnout. Rui Costa is set to face João Noronha Lopes in a runoff, with the final result pending the last polling station's ballots. Luís Filipe Vieira, despite not advancing to the runoff, has expressed his continued commitment to helping Benfica.
