Benidorm Honours British Veterans in Annual Poppy Appeal
Benidorm hosted its annual Poppy Appeal event on October 18, honouring British veterans and their families. The event drew hundreds of locals and expats, marking the first official visit of British ambassador Alex Ellis to the city.
The day began with a poignant three minutes of silence, led by Reverend Richard Seabrook. Mayor Toni Pérez paid tribute to veterans, highlighting Benidorm's strong bond with the British community. Ambassador Alex Ellis expressed gratitude for the city's support.
Among the attendees was 93-year-old Raymond Barber, a naval veteran who wore his uniform from over seven decades ago. The event featured a parade along Avenida de Castellón, led by banners and accompanied by the Torrevieja Pipes and Drums. Hundreds lined the Levante promenade, waving flags and showing their respect.
The Royal British Legion, founded in 1921, organises the Poppy Appeal worldwide. Each year, they distribute over 25 million fabric poppies to support veterans and their families.
The Poppy Appeal event in Benidorm concluded with the national anthems of Spain and the United Kingdom, followed by a final march of the banners. The event raised funds and awareness for British veterans and their families, strengthening the bond between the British community and their Spanish neighbours.
