Bergisch Gladbach elects four deputy mayors in historic council decision
Bergisch Gladbach's city council has made history by electing four deputy mayors for the first time. This decision, approved by a large majority, aims to better reflect the majority distribution among parties and has increased the annual cost by €9,176.40.
The council, in its first session, elected four deputy mayors instead of the usual three. This move was proposed by the CDU, SPD, and the Greens, and was made possible by using the d'Hondt method for allocation. The Greens, who would have had no representation with only three deputy mayors, secured a position in exchange for agreeing to the expansion. The city's voluntary budget consolidation plan required that this new expenditure be offset by savings elsewhere.
The deputy mayors will now represent the city at various events, including neighborhood festivals and weddings.
The election of four deputy mayors in Bergisch Gladbach is a significant change that aims to provide better representation for all parties. This decision, while increasing the annual cost, has been approved by an overwhelming majority and will see the deputy mayors taking on more responsibilities within the city.
