Bergisch Gladbach’s historic town houses spark fierce council debate over redevelopment

The future of Bergisch Gladbach’s historic Altstadtrathäuser has sparked a heated debate in the city council. The CDU’s position on the town houses clashes sharply with its earlier stance on the Zanders site. Frank Mertens, the faction’s representative, now argues for a cautious approach—one that delays investor involvement until key assessments are complete.

The city must decide how to develop the area between Konrad-Adenauer-Platz and Gohrsmühle. Officials have already narrowed the options to three preferred variants, labelled 0, 1, and 2. The focus has shifted toward mixed-use plans, including offices, micro-apartments, and ground-floor commercial spaces.

The CDU’s demand for a city-led assessment delays immediate investor talks. If adopted, this approach would mark a significant shift from past strategies. The final decision will determine how quickly—and by whom—the Altstadtrathäuser site is redeveloped.
