Bergisch Gladbach’s ‘WortspieGL’ unites community against far-right threats

Bergisch Gladbach's city library hosted an engaging afternoon event, 'WortspieGL', celebrating democracy and openness. The event, organized by several local groups, drew a large, curious audience eager to discuss and learn.

Mayor Marcel Kreutz kicked off the event, emphasizing the importance of standing against far-right ideologies. The afternoon began with presentations delving into the horrors of National Socialism, including powerful recitations of Thomas Mann's radio addresses and a speech by Margot Friedländer. Attendees were also challenged to confront stereotypes through a thought-provoking photo display.

The event explored the themes of democracy and revolution, drawing from the book 'Democracy and Revolution'. It highlighted the strength and importance of democracy in collective efforts. During breaks, attendees could engage with various organizations promoting democracy, diversity, and equality. The afternoon concluded with a round of introductions, moderated by Georg Watzlawek, where participating organizations shared their missions and ways to advocate for openness, tolerance, and democracy.

Original works by the 'Word and Art' group added a creative touch to the event. Students also contributed by helping record interviews with refugees, available as podcasts in the computer room.

The 'WortspieGL' event in Bergisch Gladbach successfully sparked lively discussions and further questions about democracy, openness, and tolerance. With the support of organizations like Omas gegen Rechts, Bergisch Gladbach für Demokratie und Vielfalt, and Proud Moms and Dads, the event fostered a sense of community and shared purpose.
