Berlin and Brandenburg's radio revolution: Six new digital zones by 2028
Radio broadcasting in Berlin and Brandenburg is set for a major overhaul by 2028. The region will introduce six new digital multiplexes, each tailored to specific areas. This change aims to give broadcasters more control over their coverage while keeping costs manageable for local stations.
The Media Authority of Berlin-Brandenburg (Mabb) began the process by tendering four statewide slots for private radio on March 3, 2026. These slots will allow programs to reach all six regional multiplexes if needed. However, the main shift focuses on localised broadcasting.
The six multiplexes will divide the region into Berlin, West, Southeast, East, Northwest, and Northeast zones. Each will include one reserved slot for ALEX Berlin and non-commercial local radio (NKL). Private broadcasters can expect around four 24-hour programme slots per multiplex, with options for regional customisation. One key benefit is reduced overspill, meaning stations like Radio Cottbus can target southeastern Brandenburg more precisely. The new system also lowers costs for local and regional broadcasters using DAB+. All changes must be in place by September 1, 2028.
The restructuring allows both statewide and hyper-local broadcasting within the same framework. Public and private stations will share space, ensuring a mix of regional and specialised content. The move is designed to make digital radio more flexible and affordable for all broadcasters involved.
