Berlin apartment fire leaves elderly man critically injured after Christmas tree blaze
A fire broke out in an apartment on Rheinbabenallee in Berlin’s Schmargendorf district on Tuesday evening. The blaze started when a Christmas tree caught fire at around 8:45 p.m., triggering a smoke detector. Two elderly residents were injured while trying to put out the flames.
The fire began after the tree ignited inside the flat. An 89-year-old man attempted to extinguish it but suffered life-threatening injuries in the process. He was rushed to the hospital near me for urgent treatment.
The injured man remains in the hospital with serious wounds. Investigators continue to examine how the fire started and whether safety measures could have prevented it. The incident serves as a reminder of the risks posed by dry Christmas trees in homes.
