Berlin apartment fire linked to minors using fireworks under investigation

A fire broke out overnight on the balcony of an apartment building in Staaken. The blaze spread to a first-floor flat, leaving it uninhabitable. Authorities have since launched an investigation after witnesses claimed minors started the fire with a firework.

The incident began when flames erupted on the balcony of a residential building along Semmelländerweg. Firefighters arrived quickly, extinguishing the blaze and evacuating all residents. No injuries were reported, but the fire damaged the balcony and the neighbouring apartment, rendering it temporarily unfit for living.

Witnesses told police that two minors had thrown a firework onto the balcony, igniting the blaze. Officers later identified the suspects as 13-year-old Markus H. and 14-year-old Svenja K. Both were questioned as part of the ongoing investigation. During rescue efforts and evidence collection, authorities closed Semmelländerweg between the fire scene and its junction with Heerstraße. The case has now been transferred to the State Criminal Police Office’s specialised arson unit for further examination.

The two suspects remain under investigation for their alleged involvement in starting the fire. The damaged apartment will require repairs before residents can return. Police continue to gather evidence as the arson unit takes over the case.
