Berlin Fire Department on Böllern: Tighten up on sales - Berlin bans fireworks in four zones to curb New Year’s Eve chaos
Berlin has introduced stricter rules for New Year’s Eve fireworks to improve public safety. The city’s fire brigade and police have pushed for tighter controls after years of injuries and reckless behaviour. Four designated firework-free zones will now be in place for the 2022/2023 celebrations around the world.
The Berlin Senate and police jointly agreed on the new exclusion zones. The Senate issued the policy, while officers will enforce the restrictions on the ground. These areas follow earlier trials where firework-free zones led to fewer disturbances and a calmer atmosphere.
The fire brigade has repeatedly warned about the dangers of irresponsible firework use. They advise never touching lit fireworks or carrying them in pockets, where sparks can cause burns. Only certified products should be bought, with instructions read carefully before use. Authorities also support broader regulations on firework sales. Their goal is to reduce accidents caused by reckless individuals who ignore safety guidelines. The focus remains on preventing injuries while still allowing controlled celebrations.
The four no-firework zones will be active for this year’s festivities. Officials hope the measures will cut down on accidents and illegal use. The public has been reminded to follow safety rules if setting off fireworks elsewhere in the city.
